Description
For many, Anticosti Island remains a remote and mysterious land of forests and rivers. Acquired from the Menier family in 1926, the island was soon transformed into a vast lumberyard by the Anticosti Corporation. Then came the era of Consolidated Paper Corporation, associated with Bathurst in 1967.
Willy-nilly, for nearly forty years, “Consol” exploited the island’s riches before the Quebec government took possession in 1974.
Here’s an epic rich in activities and anecdotes, told through memories. Here are the men and women who, with the help of Anticostians, built and preserved the island’s precious landscape.
About the authors:
Lionel Lejeune was born in Baie-Ellis, Anticosti Island, on September 14, 1911. As a child, he was a playmate of Jean and Hubert Menier. He became the Villa’s janitor from 1939 to 1952, and Consolidated Paper’s official photographer from 1946 until his departure in 1966. Now retired, he takes the opportunity to share his memories with us.
Jean-Noël Dion was born in Saint-Simon de Bagot, near Saint-Hyacinthe, in 1956. He has written several historical monographs and contributed to a number of periodicals, including as a literary critic and columnist, and has written numerous articles for the Société d’histoire de Saint-Hyacinthe. He is also working on setting up an agri-food museum in the Maskoutain region. Although Anticosti is a far-off land, he has been fascinated by this environment, which is unique in Quebec.
